The Running Case: Backlit Takeover#

How to use this case#

Backlit Takeover is a fictional commercial microdrama built for this book, and the shared test bench that carries the methods in every chapter. It is not the center of the book, and it is certainly not a "correct answer" about genre or style. Read the production system in the introduction first, then use this case to watch one set of characters, assets and story facts pass through writing, visual development, continuity, generation, sound, editing, distribution and agent orchestration.

We keep its failed versions as well, because production capability is not only the ability to make something good — it is the ability to locate exactly what is wrong with something bad. Whenever a specific choice in this case conflicts with the more general method, change the case rather than bending the method to fit it.

The premise in one sentence#

Lin Yun — an audit specialist thrown out by her foster mother and then fired in front of her colleagues — returns to Shenghua Group as the representative of the party acquiring it; she means only to expose the false accounts that led to her father's death three years ago, and discovers that her missing birth mother may still be under the group's control.

The promise to the audience#

Every few episodes the audience will watch a reversal of status won by professional competence and evidence — not by a wealthy man appearing from nowhere to back the protagonist. Every counterattack peels back one more layer of family secret, so that the workplace revenge and the search for the mother are the same chain of cause and effect.

These frames are not a locked shot list. They are the visual baseline for the case. Later chapters take the same scene apart from the angles of screen axis, character identity, hands and props, legibility of proof, performance intensity, sound placement and cutting order. A running case in a professional process has to let the reader watch one problem travel through different workstations — not just re-read the same character names.

Principal characters#

Lin Yun CH_LINYUN#

Twenty-eight, legal audit specialist. Outwardly contained, in the habit of observing before acting under pressure. Her real ability is not omnicompetence; it is finding inconsistency in contracts, cash flows and the way people phrase things. Her wound is that an audit lead she filed three years ago contributed indirectly to her father's death, so she both craves the truth and fears implicating family again.

Visual anchors: narrow oval face, straight fine brows, a small mole below the left eye, straight black hair to the collarbone. Early on she wears an old dark grey suit; after the identity reversal she moves to sharply cut black, but keeps the old fountain pen her father left behind.

Lin Wei CH_LINWEI#

Twenty-seven, brand vice president at Shenghua Group, and the daughter the Lin family publicly acknowledges. Her skill is manufacturing an interpretive frame in public: never a flat denial, but getting everyone to believe first that Lin Yun is emotionally unstable and taking revenge on her family for money. Her weakness is that she must sustain the image of the flawless heir.

Shen Yan CH_SHENYAN#

Thirty-one, crisis counsel for the acquiring fund. He is not a power accessory who exists to solve the protagonist's problems; he is the person controlling risk. He will protect Lin Yun, and he will also stop her when she is ready to publish evidence at any cost. The tension between them comes from one question: is the truth worth sacrificing people who are still alive.

Zhou Lan CH_ZHOULAN#

Fifty-two, Lin Yun's foster mother and the effective controller of Shenghua. Her public goal is closing the financing round. Her hidden goal is burying an identity swap and a diversion of medical funds from years ago. She rarely loses control; her strongest weapon is making unlawful acts look like a private family misunderstanding.

Chen Mo CH_CHENMO#

Thirty, Lin Yun's former colleague. He reads as a betrayer early on, while in fact preserving original ledgers inside the company. Every time he helps, it must cost him risk — otherwise he degenerates into a convenient plot device.

Function map for the first ten episodes#

Episode one: the rough version and the target version#

In the rough version, Lin Yun walks into the company, is stopped at reception, and both sides explain that she no longer works there. The information is correct, but there is no action that cannot be ignored and no pressure that changes status immediately.

In the target version, the first shot is Lin Yun's badge being cut, the pieces landing beside the acquisition agreement on the boardroom table. Off screen, someone says: "Former employees cannot attend the board meeting." Lin Yun pushes a second document into frame: "Then the acquirer's representative will attend." The same information has become visible conflict, identity contrast, and a piece of proof.

Asset and continuity principles#

• Lin Yun's old fountain pen exists from E001, but its purpose is not revealed until E009.
• E001–E003 take place on the afternoon of the same working day; her wardrobe, hair and the position of the pen may not change.
• Before and after the power cut at the E006 banquet, character positions and eyelines must be derivable from the location floor plan.
• The small mole below Lin Yun's left eye is an identity anchor and must never move to the right side.
• All contracts, payment records, DNA reports and phone text use composited layers in post; never the pseudo-text produced inside a generated image.
