15.1 A cut point is not an arbitrary fade to black#

A cut point is an exchange of value interrupted on purpose. The audience has already invested attention and emotion; the work brings a specific satisfaction into predictable range; and then, before release, it asks them to continue, to pay, or to watch an ad.

An effective cut point is not "something unexpected happened." It is a moment where the audience can state exactly what they want in the next second. It rests on comprehension, investment and trust.

15.2 The five stages of a satisfaction#

A satisfaction usually passes through promise, accumulation, approach, release and consequence. A cut can go at any stage, with different effects.

Cutting just after the promise leaves the question not yet important enough. Cutting during the approach produces the strongest conversion impulse. Cutting after release leaves the audience satisfied but with weaker motivation to continue. Cutting inside the consequence can deliver this episode's payoff and open a new question at the same time.

A paywall boundary most often sits where a critical action has started and its result is unfinished, or where the first answer has arrived and its larger meaning has not been explained.

Figure 15-1 The difference in trust between a healthy cut point and a false one

Figure 15-1 The upper path establishes a specific question, brings the result close, repays part of the value immediately after the cut, and then opens a deeper question. The lower path cuts on vague danger, resets or stalls in the next episode, and spends down the audience's trust.

Repaying immediately does not mean telling every secret in the next episode. It means delivering the specific value the audience bought by continuing. You can answer who is behind the door and then ask why he is there. You cannot open the door, cut to an unrelated breakfast, and defer the answer for three more episodes.

15.3 Six common cut types#

Identity: an identity is about to be publicly proven. Proof: a document, recording or result is about to appear. Danger: a character is about to suffer irreversible harm. Choice: the protagonist must decide between two costs. Relationship: a confession, betrayal, act of protection or intimacy is about to be answered. Public stage: everyone concerned is present and status is about to change.

Combinations usually beat single types. E006 is proof, public stage and danger at once: the birth record is about to be displayed, the lights go out, and a live photo of the mother arrives.

15.4 A cut point strength formula#

Use this as a diagnostic, not as arithmetic:

cut strength ~ question specificity x emotional investment x sense of imminence x trust in repayment
               - comprehension cost - feeling of being cheated

Any term near zero weakens the result. A very specific question about characters nobody cares about is just a puzzle. Deep investment with a distant result produces no immediate action. And if the work has never repaid before, the audience will not believe an answer follows payment.

15.5 How E006 is constructed#

E001–E005 have accumulated four things: Lin Yun's identity has been denied; the counterattack by record has already paid off several times; the figure of the mother has been confirmed; and the birth records and the company payments have begun to converge. E006 moves a private secret onto a public stage.

boundary:
  episode: E006
  type: proof_public_stage_plus_danger
  setup_paid:
    - Lin Yun obtains the hospital's original serial number
    - Lin Wei herself demands public proof
    - Zhou Lan cannot stop the banquet screen privately
action_started: the birth record and the bracelet number displayed side by side
expected_satisfaction: everyone present confirms the two identities were swapped
  interruption: the banquet loses power
new_information: Lin Yun receives a live photo of her mother
  viewer_question:
    - what did the screen show
    - where is the mother
next_episode_first_shot: the timestamp on the phone photo still advancing

The cut works because the action has genuinely started, the space is public, the rules of evidence are already known, and the danger changes whether Lin Yun will continue to expose anything.

15.6 Which frame to cut on#

The same event offers at least four cut points. Before the screen displays — not enough imminence. After the title appears — the audience knows the type of proof. After the first digit of the serial number — the action has started. After the complete result but before the reactions — the answer is given and the social consequence withheld.

The choice depends on what this episode owes. If the audience is waiting for a fact, cut before the fact. If this episode already promised the fact, deliver it and withhold the consequence. Do not always cut at the earliest possible position.

In the edit, compare frame by frame: has the audience understood the question; is the last visible information specific enough; have music and performance completed the sense of imminence before the cut; is any explanation still needed after black. A good cut point does not depend on a caption promising a better next episode.

15.7 Honest repayment#

The first shot of the next episode must confirm the cut point still stands and repay the core promise quickly. The answer may be complicated. The question may not be withdrawn.

The dishonest version has E007 reveal that the photo is three years old and the birth record was a misunderstanding. Both questions are cancelled. The honest version has the photo's metadata advancing in real time, proving the mother is alive; the screen's local cache preserving part of the result, giving preliminary confirmation of the swap; and a new question about whether continuing to publish will endanger the mother.

Complication is not denial. The answer may be more dangerous than the audience expected, but it must respect which satisfaction they paid for.

15.8 Repay first, then borrow#

The order in E007 should be: confirm the live photo; take rescue action; confirm the key serial number from the cache; discover the location may be false; raise the question of an internal leak. If the episode opens with a new mysterious phone call and never addresses the photo, the audience feels deflected.

Set a repayment deadline for every cut point: confirm in the first shot, partially repay in the first ten seconds, answer fully within the first half — or state explicitly why longer is needed. The deadline goes into the episode contract.

15.9 Paid, ad-funded and organic returns differ#

A paid cut requires the satisfaction to be worth crossing a payment friction. An IAA cut requires willingness to tolerate an ad and a wait. Organic return viewing depends more on memory and the next visit. All three can use the same question, with different cut positions and repayment density.

The paid version may interrupt before the result. The IAA version often works better giving a partial result and then breaking before the consequence. The compilation version should reduce repeated cut points to preserve continuous viewing. Keep beats at the episode layer and compile different boundaries at the distribution layer.

15.10 Cut points must not overdraw the characters#

Escalating through abductions, car crashes, miscarriages and amnesia devalues danger and can destroy the protagonist's agency. A cut point is best generated by the current goal and the opponent's strategy, not by random external catastrophe.

The photo of the mother works because it connects to a mystery that already existed and forces Lin Yun to choose between public evidence and protecting her. A stranger's child being abducted would only be danger bolted on.

15.11 Cut points and ad creatives#

An ad can cut its promise backward out of a cut point, but it cannot show a result the show does not contain. Tag each creative with the satisfaction it promises, how long the show takes to reach that satisfaction, and whether a mismatch exists.

A high-clicking creative that packages the E006 identity cut as pure abduction thriller attracts a different desire. If the first five episodes are mostly auditing, the drop-off does not prove the show fails — it may prove the entrance promised the wrong thing.

15.12 Testing cut points#

Do not only ask whether people want the next episode. Ask what specifically they want to know; how long they think it will take to get it; what, if it appeared first after payment, would feel like a con; what this episode already gave them; and whose outcome matters most.

Test three rough cuts at different cut frames with everything before them identical. Record the choices and the retellings. If viewers cannot articulate the question, fix comprehension first — adding music and red captions will not help.

15.13 The card ledger#

card_ledger:
  boundary_id: CARD_E006_V03
promise_origin: the figure on CCTV in E004
  accumulated_payments:
    - E004 proves the figure is not a passerby
    - E005 proves the hospital number connects to the mother
withheld: public confirmation of the birth swap
interruption: live danger forces Lin Yun to stop
  repayment:
    confirm_at: E007_0-3s
    partial_at: E007_3-12s
    full_at: E007_28s
new_debt: who leaked the banquet and the rescue route
  versions:
paid: cut before the result line
IAA: cut after one pair of numbers matches
compilation: no cut; go straight to the close-up of Lin Yun's phone

15.14 SOP for cut point design#

First, list the old debts this episode has already repaid. Second, choose one specific, accumulated question. Third, identify the promise, approach, release and consequence stages of the satisfaction. Fourth, choose the cut type and the public space. Fifth, make sure the key action has genuinely started. Sixth, compare cut frames. Seventh, design the next episode's first shot and the repayment deadline. Eighth, compile separate paid, IAA and compilation versions. Ninth, test question retelling and the feeling of being cheated. Tenth, write the result into the card ledger.

15.15 Fault tree#

Symptom: exciting ending, nobody pays. The question is novel but unaccumulated, or unrelated to the character's desire. Connect the cut to earlier debt.

Symptom: viewers say "here we go again." Only danger or identity cuts, used repeatedly without repayment. Change the type of satisfaction and settle the old debts.

Symptom: complaints or drop-off after payment. E007 withdrew, delayed or deflected the question. Confirm in the first shot and repay in the first half.

Symptom: the cut depends on black frames and a musical hit. The event has no imminence and no specific answer. Start the action, make the proof visible, use a public space.

Symptom: poor retention with high ad click-through. The entrance hook and the show's promise are mismatched. Compare the creative's tags against the engine of the first five episodes.

15.16 Checklist, exercises and deliverables#

Check that the question is specific; that emotion is already invested; that the satisfaction is imminent; that the work has a history of repayment; that the cut sits at the right stage; that the next episode confirms immediately; that complication preserves the original question; that the commercial versions are designed separately; and that the cut arises from character and main line.

Exercise one: design identity, choice and consequence cuts for one event. Exercise two: cut three different frames and have cold viewers retell the question. Exercise three: write a dishonest E007 and then rewrite it as honest repayment. Exercise four: adapt a paywall boundary into IAA and compilation versions.

Deliverables for this chapter: the boundary design, the frame-by-frame cut comparison, the repayment contract, the card ledger, the commercial version table, and the cut point test record.

15.17 The trust budget and the debt ceiling#

Every cut point borrows trust. Besides the question, the card ledger records episodes already waited, partial repayment, full repayment, and the reason for any delay. A core question that only accumulates new mysteries without settling old debts overdraws trust — and completion can fall even while individual episodes look fine.

Set a debt ceiling: how many unpaid questions may exist at one level, the maximum wait, and the intermediate evidence that must appear. The ceiling is not formulaic writing. It forces the team to see whether suspense is being used to conceal a story that is not advancing.

15.18 The first-shot contract after a cut#

The first shot after payment or after the next episode begins must confirm the audience has returned to the same event, and repay the withheld information shortly after. It may show the consequence before the full answer. It may not change location, replay a recap, or manufacture the same suspense again.

repayment_contract:
  card: E006_END
withheld: the DNA result and the origin of the live photo
next_open: close on the phone, same banquet, after the power cut
  confirmation_max_seconds: 2
  partial_repayment_max_seconds: 12
  full_repayment_target: E007_B05

15.19 Version variants and the commercial honesty audit#

Paid, IAA and organic viewing may choose different cut frames, but the story facts and the order of repayment stay identical. Flag a promise mismatch on any version whose advertising promises a payoff the show does not contain, or which still gives no answer after payment.

Test cut points on more than clicks and payments: look at retention after the cut, refunds, the feeling of being cheated in comments, and completion of the following episodes. A pattern that lifts short-term conversion while lowering trust should not be promoted into a season-wide rule.

A note on sources#

Paid microdrama practice in China treats the cut point as a conversion step, and viewing trust matters just as much. This chapter emphasizes the repayment history before the cut and the delivery after payment, so that optimizing instantaneous conversion does not damage long-term value.
